Tom Gormican’s “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent”
Amid a half-baked script, dull action sequences and stupid movie references sits great chemistry between Nicolas Cage and Pedro Pascal. This movie could have cut its budget by half, its length by a third and focused on dialogue between these two and there would have been something to enjoy. Instead, the film descends increasingly into predictable tropes burying the talent at the core.
On top of that, interesting ideas fail to develop and just vanish from the film. For example, there are moments where Nicolas Cage is challenged by his younger self and these scenes work but they don’t actually go anywhere in the grand scheme. It’s a frustrating watch. Also, the central premise is so plain stupid from the start but gets increasingly so the f urther into the film we go. It’s not the weight of massive talent but the squandered opportunities that are unbearable.
Give it a miss unless you’re on a 12 hour flight and there’s no other option.
