William Brent Bell’s “Orphan: First Kill”

Orphan: First Kill (2022)

Surprisingly fun pulp prequel with a crackling script by David Coggeshall which has some surprises up its sleeve

First, if you’ve not seen the original Orphan go see it without researching it or watching the trailer and when you’re done, return here for the review to this prequel. Originally titled Esther and then given its current, straight-to-video title, it gives us back story to the mysterious “orphan” of the original while prudently avoiding any origin story in favour of something different.

David Coggeshall’s script manages to do develop Esther(Isabelle Fuhrman) without taking away the mystery and in opposition to the previous film gives us a perspective closer to her view. What’s more astounding is that it manages a few meaningful twists that impact the story beyond shock value.

As far as the cast, they’re solid though Fuhrman is noticeably older-looking but I was able to look past that; some might not. I’d put William Brent Bell in the same category as Zack Snyder as a cinematographer/production designer in director’s clothing who is competent with look-and-feel but not so great with the rest. Still, if that has you running for the hills (I wouldn’t blame you), Coggeshall’s script is solid enough to carry the flaws for an entertaining ride which can stand on its own.

Overall, an imperfect but entertaining bit of pulp.
